OIL AT GISBORNE.
BRIGHTER PROSPECTS.
[BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Tuesday. The director of- geological surveys (Dr. Bell), accompanied by Mr. W. D. Lysnar, chairman of directors of the Gisborne Oil Company, returned to town to-night from a visit to the company's bore at Waitangi Hill. For the last three weeks the bore has been in stiff puggy clay, through which it was found almost impossible to drive the casing, and Dr. Bell had been asked to advise whether it was best to persevere under the difficult circumstances or abandon the well. On arrival at Waitangi this morning, however, it Was found that a change in the strata had taken place at two p.m. on Saturday, and between then and noon to-day more progress had been made than in the previous three weeks. The bore passed through a rock formation, and got into another clay of improved condition. Dr. Bell is understood to ,be more than pleased with what he has seen, and regards the difficulties encountered as esuential to success. He will confer with the directors to-morrow afternoon.
