The Cocos, ■or Keeling, Inlands, a group of about 20 small coral islands, lie about 700 miles south-west of Sumatra, arid 1200 miles south-west of Singapore. The islands, which are covered with cocoanut palms, were discovered by Captain Keeling, in 1609. and were visited by Darwin in 1836.
