THE RAILWAY WORKSHOPS.
REDUCTION OF HANDS. [BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Sunday. The Minister for Railways, on being interviewed regarding the resolution of the Canterbury railway servants in regard to the dismissal of men from the railway workshops, said : —"I have not got work for the men. The principal part of the reduction has been made in the points and crossings shop, which is most up-to-date, and can turn out work very much faster than the requirements. The result is that we have sufficient points and crossings in hand available for all-the work that can be seen ahead for some. time to come. There is no room for the blacksmiths or labourers who have been engaged in that shop in other branches. I regret the necessity for it as much as anyone, but where there is no necessary work to be done I have no other course than to reduce the hands. As soon as ever I can possibly find room for them I will be only too pleased to take them on again."
