NEW RIFLE RANGE.
HUNTLP RESIDENT'S GENEROSITY. [FROM OUB OWN CORRESrOJTDENT.] '■;..: Ht/ntlTj Thursday. ; A new range for the public school cadets was owned on Wednesday afternoon. The chairman of the committee (the Rev. A. J. Beck) spoke of the necessity for preparation arid readiness to defend the country against any invader, to accomplish which drill, discipline, and training in the use of arms were imperative. Recognising such, Mr. L. B. Harris, junior, had furnished and equipped the range, which was an excellent one in every respect, and by. being within five minutes' walk of the school was so easily reached that rifle-shooting was brought quite close to the pupils. He hoped that they would show their appreciation of Mr. Harris* kindness and forethought by being assiduous in their practice. Mr. Harris then fired the first shot, registering a " bull," and declared the range formally opened. To be a successful shot, he said, early training was as necessary as it was in athletics of any kind, and he would feel amoly repaid for any expense to which he had gone if he saw the boys taking up the game manfully, and putting their best into what was one of the highest and most useful forms of sport. On the call of the headmaster, the cadets, some 40 of whom were on parade, gave three cheers for Mr. Harris, after which the first stage of the class-firing was proceeded with, some very fair scores being registered.
