A CHRISTMAS BOX.

It is unfortunate (says the ~ Wellington Post) that the excitement which any stirring of the licensing question always provokes should have temporarily obscured what is undoubtedly the greatest thing in the Financial Statement. Sir Joseph Ward has many ... claims upon the gratitude of his countrymen, .and some upon the gratitude of the Empire, but none will be higher or is likely to be more lasting than that which he will have established if he becomes the first statesman in the Empire to give his country the benefit of a system of ' compulsory military training. He will indeed rank high as an Imperial benefactor by the time his scheme is through, and we hope to see it through before Christmas. Could a patriotic State deserve a more appropriate Christmas box?
