EMPIRE FESTIVAL.
PICTURES OF COLONIAL LIFE.
A LONDON ATTRACTION. By Telegraph.— Association.— (Received November 17, 11.10 p.m.)
. London, November 17. , Arrangements have been completed for the holding of a Festival of the Empire at the Crystal Palace next summer.'. . ' • ■•
Lord Plymouth is chairman of the council, which includes Lords Avebury, Strathcona, ' BUrnham, and Rothschild. A total of £50,000 has been guaranteed towards the scheme.
Lords Minto, Grey, Plunket, and Selborne, and Sir Ralph Williams are members of the organising committee for the colonies.
It is hoped that many civilians from the colonies will participate in a cycle of pageants of London's history, in which there will be 15,000 other performers.
The grounds will be devoted to spectacles of colonial scenery, colonial industries, harvesting, shearing, timber-getting, mining, and there will be cinematograph views depicting various phases of life in the different colonies.
The festival will extend over May, June, and July, and the promoters hope to secure educational resists that will help in the consolidation of the Empire. The profits are to go to the King's Hospital fund. The newspapers receive the proposal favourably,* but some point out that it will prove a counter attraction to the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition. ■ . ,:....
