THE MOTION FOR REJECTION.
SOCIALISM IN A -SMALL WAY.
BELLOC ON TARIFF REFORM..
By Telegraph.—Press Association.— London, November 3. ' During the debate on Mr. Austen Chamberlain's motion for the rejection of the Budget Mr. Harold Cox (Liberal member for Preston) intimated that, much as he disliked the land taxes, he intended to vote for the Budget. Mr. Philip Snowden (Socialist member for Blackburn),, vigorously supported the Budget, because it began to apply in a small way the principles held by Socialists. He urged the Opposition not to talk nonsense about , tariff reform to ■ the working class, whose intelligence they under-rated. ■•'..'•
Mr. C. Hobhouse (Financial Secretary to the Treasury), defending the Bill, declared that while the total capital sent abroad was last year greater than in any preceding period the percentage did not exceed that of 20 years ago.
Mr. Hilaire Belloc (Liberal member for South Salford) supported the Budget and free trade, on the grounds that the country was unable, to stand the complete topsy-turvey-dom that would follow the imposition of a duty on foreign manufactures. He would prefer that the country should undertake a dangerous war with her great rival rather than such an experiment.
