OLD COLONISTS' REUNION.
Thr annual reunion of old colonists was held yesterday afternoon in St. Andrew's Church, which, was packed to the doors. A special service was held, at which the | Rev. W. Gittos presided, and a special programme of music was rendered. Mr. Gittos in his address referred to the sterling work of the old colonists who came. out in 1842, saying that among the best of the possessions which they brought with them was character, which enabled them to brave the hardships and toils of early colonial life. Mr, Gittos also paid a tribute to the sterling character of the Maoris, saying that when) thoy were trained and educated they were found to be nature's gentlemen. While on this subject lie condemned the liquor traffic, and said the introduction of liquor into this country had done great harm to the native population. He referred to the good which might be done by the rising generation in attempting to prevent the sale of alcohol to the Maoris, and concluded his address with an appeal to the people to assist in carrying prohibition throughout New Zealand. The Revs. H. R. Dewsbury and J. M. Simpson delivered short addresses, and Dr. Neligan (Anglican Bishop of Auckland), who was present, also addressed a few words to the congregation, taking as his subject "Auld Lan« Syne." He made a strong appeal for Bible teaching in State schools, saying that he hoped to see the time when it would be included in the curriculum.
One feature of the meeting that drew sympathetic comment was that it was the first one of its kind for some time past at which the Rev. Mr. Watkin, who died recently, had not been present.
