Ms. and Mrs. F. Gaude*, of Auckland, leave by the Maheno to-day for Sydney. Messrs. E. S. Luttrell and W. Thorpe, of Nelson, are at present staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. A. Littlebnry, of Wellington, arrived by the express yesterday, and is staying at the Star Hotel. : Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Parr returned to Auckland from Sydney last night by the s.s. Mokoia. Lieutenant-Colonel Hume, formerly inspector of prisons, has been appointed visiting justice of all the New Zealand prisons. Sir James Mills and Mr. T. Fenwick ■were passengers from Sydney by the Manuka on Saturday (says a Press Association cable). Mr. R. Essex, formerly Mayor of Palmerston North, and Mrs. Essex returned to Wellington by the Hauroto from a trip to the Old Country. His Excellency the Governor has accepted an invitation to attend the Navy League supper in Wellington on the 21st inst. (Trafalgar Day.) Colonel Gudgeon, who recently retired from the position of Resident Commissioner in the Cook Islands, left by the Tarawera on Saturday for Wellington. Messrs. E. A. and W. R. Dwyer, of Wellington, arrived by the Main Trunk express yesterday morning, and will leave tomorrow for the Islands by the Tofua. Mr. Wyatt, an American journalist, and Mrs. Wyatt, who are visiting New Zealand for' the,second time, arrived at Wellington by the Hauroto from San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Turner, of Suva, who, together with their daughter, have been staying in Auckland for several weeks past, leave by the Maheno to-day for Syuney. Mr. F. W. Marchant, who has been engaged by the Gisborne Harbour Board and Borough Council to report on various works, arrived in Gisborne on Saturday morning (telegraphs our correspondent). The Rev. Jas. Wilson has been unanimously invited to remain in charge of. the Auckland Methodist Mission for another year, making the eighth year in succession. He has accepted the invitation.
Mr. G. K. Totton, manager in Japan for the New Zealand Insurance Company, who is a New Zealander, is spending a few weeks' furlough in the Dominion. Mr. Totton has arrived in Auckland from the South.
Captain R. Carpenter, assistant adjutant-: general, Auckland military district, was operated on at Mount Pleasant Hospital yesterday for appendicitis, and is progressing as well as can be expected.
Mr. John Hoeking, an old colonist, has died at his residence in Mary-street, Mount Eden, at the advanced age of 90 years. He was for manv years a prominent official in the Methodist Church. Mr. J. H. Hoskmg, K.C., of Dunedin, is a son of deceased, " ■/• * '
'-Dr. Claridge, Waitara, sustained an unfortunate accident the other evening while returning home on his motor cycle from a visit to a patient. Through the machine going into a bole in the road Dr. Claridge was heavily thrown, sustaining a broken leg and an injured elbow. He was taken into the New Plymouth Hospital for treatment.
