AUCKLAND OYSTER BEDS.
-.-,; [by TELEGRAPH. special correspondent.] Wellington, Sunday. It is stated in the annual report of the - Marine Department that during the first season (1908) that the State had control ; of the Auckland oyster trade 11,005 sacks u of oysters were sold, realising with refunds of cartage and wharfage, £6938. ' The cost of picking and sale was £5705,, a profit of £1233 being thus made. ''There is no doubt," bays the report, "that the new system conduces to the ;;-y;preservation of the oyster beds, as oysters of marketable size only are taken off the rocks, and sufficient are left to enable - the beds to be picked each year. Some i; of the beds have not.yet recovered from the depletion which took place when they were open for licensed pickers under the I old system in 1907, and previous years. As the old system of picking resulted in : .' - the total depletion of the rocks in many .places, it is advisable that the Department should Dlant oysters in thesa places." ,■.-'•' . '■■■"'.
