MEETINGS.
. ——<*» ; — ARCHHILL ROAD BOARD. Those present at the meeting of the Archhill Road Board last evening were: The chairman (Mr. J. Jenkins), Messrs. Dawson, Ewen, Hawkins, and Walker. A deputation from the Fire Brigade waited on the Board, asking that an additional bell be provided for the fire station. The present bell could not be heard all over the district, and for tho last four fires the average number of men in attendance had been three, and those in the lower part of the district could not hear it. The deputation suggested that a new bell should be erected at the corner of Oxford-street. The chairman said it was time that it was made compulsory for people to obtain permits before they were allowed to build in the district. A committee was fret up to go into the matter, and to report to a special meeting to be held in a fortnight's time. 1.0. G.T. At the usual meeting of the Hope of Grey Lynn Lodge, No. 107, the following resolution was passed:—"That this Good Templars' Lodge views with a very great deal of pleasure the fact that Invereargill, a large no-license district, has again held its quarterly Supreme Court sessions without one criminal case being brought before it, and we again urge tho electors of this Dominion to vote out a traffic which is evidently the greatest cause of crime." TYPOGRAPHICAL UNION. A special meeting of the Auckland Typographical Union was held on Saturday evening for the purpose of dealing with the following matters remitted by the Board of Management:—(l) An invitation to join the Auckland branch of the New Zealand! Labour party, which has been formed as a result of the meetings held by Mr. A. W. Hogg, ex-Minister for Labour; (2) a circular from the Auckland Trades and Labour Council requesting the union to eo-operato in the presentation of an illuminated address to Mr. Hogg; (3) a request from a committee at Masterton to co-operate in a national testimonial to Mr. Hogg; (4) a circular inviting the union to join the Northern Co-operative Distribution Society. There was a moderate attendance. Tho president, Mr. H. W. Brookes, presided. After a general discussion all the proposals were negatived. The main reason given during the discussion for declining to join the New Zealand Labour party, also for declining to endorse the testimonial to Mr. Hogg, was the fact that the union as a bodyhas made it a practice for very many years to pledge itself to no political party. With regard to the Co-operative Distribution Society it. was considered advisable to submit the prospectus to members individually, so that those who wish to join may do so.
