WAIKATO LICENSING COMMITTEE.
[BY TELEGRAPH'.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton, Monday. At the quarterly meeting of the Waikato Licensing Committee renewals of the licenses of the Ohaupo and Hunlly hotels, which were held over at the annual meeting, pending repairs, were granted to Messrs. W. G. Abbott and L- B. Harris, junr., respectively. The latter asked for an expression from the bench as to hie license fee, his hotel being in a town district. He had been informed that the fee should be £25 f not £40, as in boroughs. The chairman said the committee had considered the point, and come to the conclusion that a borough did not include a town district, but it was not for them to rule on the point. Clerks of local bodies would have to use their discretion, but the opinion of the bench was that under the new Act £40 was only payable in a borough. Transfers of licenses were granted as follows :—Waikato Hotel, W. H. Knock to J. \Y. 11. Bright ; Whatawhata Hotel, 1). Edwards to U. Duncan. An application by the licensee of the Whatawhata Hotel to extinguish the light at 10 p.m. was opposed by the police and refused. Applications for a wholesale license from C. L. Inne-s and Co., Ltd-, and the Waipa Brewery Company were refused. The, application of the Waikato A. and P. Association for two booths at the show at Claudelands in November was refused; the usual one booth being granted.
