The reorganisation of the Civil Service which has been going on since April last lias now been practically completed. When the big changes were announced the Prime Minister stated that an annual saving of at least £250,000 would be effected, and the forthcoming session's Estimates will be particularly interesting as indicating to some extent how this is to be done. When the Government tackled the big problem of growing administrative expenditure (says the New Zealand Times) there were 34 Departments in existence, but when the scheme of reform is finished only 16 separate divisions of the service under different under-secre-taries will remain. Very few further dismissals are likely to take place, the main rearrangements having been carried out, leaving only- a certain amount of internal readjustment to be done. The relief works for the Wellington unemployed are visibly " tailing-off" (says the Dominion). Four men were discharged on Friday from the gang at the Victoria College excavating work, leaving 11 employed. A few bricklayers were put on at the work on the new wing. The only excavating work now being done at Victoria College is on the Keltrunie Parade side of the premises.
