Cable news has just been received of severe floods which have occurred in Java, The floods hav- devastated Lamongan and Probolinggo, and 500 people have perished. Probolinggo is a town on. the north coast of Java, with a population of 9700, of whom only 600 are Europeans. The population of Java consists mostly of Javanese, Sudanese, and Madurese, all closely allied divisions of the Malay race. The population is about three millions, but only 60,000 are Europeans.
