ARCHHILL GULLY.

QUESTION OF DRAINAGE. A meeting of Eden Terrace. Arehhill, and Mount Albert ratepayers war. held in the Eden Terrace Public Hall la«t night for the purpose of considering the question of the drainage of Arclihill Gully. There was a good attendance. Mr. .1. Jenkin, chairman of Arehhill Road Board, was elected to tho chair.

The Chairman explained that when the drainage of tho gully was originally contemplated it was proposed to put in a eewer which would take both sewage and storm water, but now they were told that it was to bo a pipe drain sufficient only to take the sewage. Personally, lie favoured sticking to the originaf proposal.

Mr. M. J. Coylo, chairman of the Mount Albert Road Hoard, said the sewer proposed provided tor six times th« dry weather flow, which lie thought was quite sufficient. When they came to think of the enormous expenditure involved in the drainage scheme, he thought they had in go slow. Not only had the 'suburbim districts to pay their quota of the main intercepting .sewer and outfall, but they also had to hear the cost of reticulation and of making connections. Mr. W. K. Bush, the Drainage Board's engineer, who was in attendance, said ha had advised the, Drainage Board, in the interests of the whole of the districts concerned, to provide only for six times the dry weather flow. If" the Board provided for taking off storm water in one 'district, it would have- to do likewise in others. The engineer, in replying to questions stated that is soon as the sewer wa& constructed the present open drain would be cleaned out. and would only be utilised for taking off storm water, which was absolutely harmless. The districts concerned, if they so desired, could have a sewer constructed which would also take oft' storm water. The sewer as proposed by the Drainage Board from Commercial Road to the city boundary would cost £3000, \n% if it was to carry exceptional storm wstt«r as well it would run into £7000.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Bush for his attendance. After .1 protracted discussion it was decided, on tf;a motion of Mr. R. MeElwain, chairman of the Eden Terrace Road Board, to urge th« Drainage Board to provide for storm" water as well as the sewage, at least as far a* Great Xonh Road, with the ur.dt>r*tandni£ that the payment of the interest on tho extra cost be- levied in the districts bead* filed.
