SAVING THE POSTAL NOTES.

A POSTMISTRESS' COOLNESS.

Commendable presence of mind was displayed by Miss Lynch, who was actingpostmistress at the Arcade Post Office, in saving the contents of the" office. She was at work when the tire started, and hearing the crackling of glass, went into the Arcade, only to find that the Queen-street entrance was barred by flame, and the Elliott-street exit- by a high gate with spikes on top. Returning to the office, Miss Lynch gathered /up the stamps, postal notes, post office orders, and papers in the office, and seized the office stool. This she placed against the gate, and was preparing to scale it when the crowd which was gathering in Elliott-street, noticing her plight, forced the gate and released her.
