ACTING-PRIME MINISTER,

Gisbobne. Tuesday. ; To-night's complimentary social to the Hon. Mr. Carroll in the Garrison Hall was.'a most pleasant function. The . attendance was large and representative of the district. Mr. Carroll was presented with an illuminated address, congratulating him on hi appointment to the "position of Acting. Prime Minister, the speakers being the Mayor (Mr. W. D. Lysnar), the Hon. Cap. tain Tucker, M.L.C., chairman Cook County Council, and Mr. John Townley chairman of the Harbour Board.
To-morrow afternoon Mr. Carroll will be 1 1 presented by" The League of Nautilus Suri; vivors" with a silver inkstand, and in the! f evening the Acting-Prime Minister will be' > entertained by the members of the Te fiau Bowling Club. On Friday the,, ActumPrime Minister leaves for Nuhaka to attend? the opening of the Stewart crossing bridge, proceeding .thence to Wairoa and back to I Wellington.
