GREAT FIRE IN AUCKLAND.
THE BURNING OF THE STRAND ARCADE IN QUEEN-STREET ON MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST 16, 1909. One of the most destructive fires that Auckland has experienced for years occurred on Monday evening, when the handsome four-storey building in Queen-street, belonging to Mr Arthur M. Myers, and known as the Strand Arcade, was completely gutted. The tiro was first discovered at 7.40 p.m., and within a few moments after the alarm had been given the flames burst out of the windows of the upper storeys, and advanced with incredible speed to the roof. The Eire Brigade arrived promptly on the scene, and worked heroically, but in spite of their utmost efforts the flames spread from end to end of the building, which was soon one great roaring mass of fire. Several persons were injured during the progress of the conflagration, and one exciting rescue was witnessed. Our picture is from a photograph taken at night by the light of the fire.
