'...;; Shannon Lass and Cauldron, *.n Radnor's stable, are both progressing in a iatishetory manner. The latter is shaping particularly well and promises to be more than useful, The total entries received for the I'unfc Club races show an improvement as compared with past years, the two open hack races being particularly well patronised. There is every reason fto believe that the gathering, which takes; place on Thursday, the 26th hist., will be one of the most successful the club has yet held.

Old Papanui again figures amongst 'he entrants for the steeplechase events. Ho has been jumping remarkably well this j-e»>on, although 18 years of age, and is expected to make a good showing in tho big race—the Hunt Club Steeplechase.

Reports from Hawera state that Nicotine has been started in work again, and that the sister of Golden Eagle is looking vory well after her spell. Mendip has thickened out tremendously, while Waiari looks in neater shape than last season. Both these horses are expected to show good form before long. Another pood performer in Tiptoe is also reported to lie likely to distinguish himself at the spring meetings, while Sir Prize continues to improve. The victory gained by Auratus in the Trial Hurdles on the opening day of tho New Zealand National Meeting made the Gold Reef gelding many additional friends for tho Grand National Hurdle Race, but, though the majority of backers here fancied him, there were many who supported Compass. Needless to say, a lot of Wanganui com went on North-east in the Winter Cup, who had been backed steadily all through the piece, both straight-out and in doubles, on tho strength of the excellent work he had done on the local tracks. ' Mr. G. F. Moore's New Zealand Cup' candidate Signor is doing steady work on his owner's private track at Tayforth, and so is Sweet, Droam, by Sweet Simon—Hurri cane. Carissima and Guiding Step are alsc going along steadily. The three-year-old True Shot (a grand-daughter of Carbine), by Pistol, will also be seen out this season. A hunter by Chasseur—Natator mare will probably be put into commission in the spring. CANTERBURY. Tuesday. ( There was plenty of money for sport in Canterbury during the past few days. At Riccarton £59,031 went through tho totalisator, while the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club handled £32,335 at Addington. Owing to Clanranald being in ill-health Sir George Clifford has leased Gravitation (by Birkenhead—Stepfeldt) to do stud duty at. Stonyhurst this season. Chryseis (by Clanranald— Crest) has foaled a colt to Treadmill, and Elusive (by Trenton Eleusis) has slipped twin foals to the same sire.
