WELSHER FINED FOR THEFT.

Timartt, Thursday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, John Laing Smith, said to be a whelsher, was charged with the theft of £1 from Andrew Brown, farmer, of Geraldine. The prosecution alleged that Brown had put £1 on Laghmor in the first race at the Hunt Club's Steeplechase meeting, on the 29th ult. Laghmor won, and accused then denied all knowledge of the bet. The defence was that accused acted as clerk to R. H. Smith, and made no bets throughout the day. The ticket produced by Brown belonged neither to R. H. Smith nor accused. The ' magistrate fined accused £3 with costs, and ordered him to pay Brown back his £1, or, in default, one month's imprisonment.
