THE PROPOSED "ZOO."
SITE AT CORNWALL PARK. The proposal to establish a "zoo" for Auckland at Cornwall Park, which was • advocated in these columns a few days ago, has been favourably commented upon by a number of citizens..'-, It may be pointed out that Sir John Logan Campbell, in Iris scheme for th« disposition of the broad acres of the park, pubSished some six years ago, did not overlook the question of providing a zoological garden for the city of his adoption. The area near Green Lane, _ now known as the "olive plantation," is set apart on the plan as the site of the "zoo" of the future. The trustees of the park, however, in view of the large expense that would be entailed, regard the proposal as one for the not very near future. "It is a question of money," they say, but it is understood that if the public were to exhibit a practical interest in the matter, by providing the necessary ways and means, the trustees would willingly consider the question of giving effect to the proposal as soon as the financial part of the scheme can be placed upon a workable basis. Wellington already has in Newtown Park a small but growing "zoo," which was started by .the gift of one animala lion—a few years ago, and what Wellington can do surely Auckland, with her greater advantages of her mild and equable climate, and unequalled facilities in Cornwall Park, can do ever better. There is v no reason why within a very short time tho beginning of a "zoo," that will do credit to a city that has always been foremost, in providing educative public facilities, should not be an accomplished fact.
