THEFT FROM A CRUISER.

William Tomey, a petty officer, and Alstin, a seaman, have been sentenced, 12 month's' imprisonment for stealing £2700 from the safe on board armoured cruiser Indomitable in February last. Ethel Stagles, a married woman,, received three months' imprisonment on a charge receiving. The- money consisted of £2200. in gold, and £500 in Bank of England £5 notes. The numbers iof the notes were known. The cash was last seen safe in the money chest at noon on Saturday, February 20, the Indomitable at the time being in the Medway, off Port Victoria. The vessel left Sheerness on the Monday afternoon with the battleship Lord Nelson and other ships of the Nore Division for Deal. The robbery must have been committed between noon on Saturday and the departure of the ship on Monday. On board His Majesty's ships the money, for the payment of the officers and men—usually a very large aggregate sum—is kept in a, chest, the key of which, in accordance with the regulations, should never be out of the care of the senior paymaster.
