THEFT OF EXPLOSIVES. HOUSEBREAKING INSTRUMENTS. At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., a man named Henry Win. Willcocks was charged that on June 10, at Newmarket, ho broke and entered the house of Klias Pascoe, and stole- therefrom 22 plugs of gelignite, 15ft of fuse, a box of detonators, and on a second count that he was found by night in possession of housebreaking instruments, to wit five skeleton keys, three door keys, and a quantity of fuse and detonators. Chief-Detective Marsack, in giving an account of the arrest of accused, particulars of which have already been published, said that in consequence of the disappearance of the gelignite from Mr. Paacoe's shed the police watch in the city was strengthened, and accused was arrested a few nights later with the material in his possession. He confessed that he had intended to "crack Bill Stevens' grocery shop." Polio© evidence was given to corroborate this. Mr. F. Earl, who appeared for accused, cross-examined the arresting policemen as to whether they had suggested " Bill Stevens' shop" to accused, implying that they had put so many questions to accused that he had at last replied, ,in order to silence them, " Oh, Bill Stevens' shop, if you like." The police denied having suggested Stevens' shop to accused. A plea of guilty was entered on each charge, and Willcocks was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. AN IMMIGRANT IN TROUBLE. Wm. Mitchell appeared on remand charged with stealing two pairs of boots, the property of Geo. Higgins. Accused, who is a recent arrival from England, consented to go to the Salvation Army Home till work was found for him. and was discharged. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Ethel Seacub. who had been several times before tin? Court on a charge of attempting to commit suicide, was discharged on promising to go to a home. MISCELLANEOUS. W. Hanson, alias Thos. Hannan, for committing an indecent act in Elliott-street, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. John Howarth, charged with drunkenness and committing an indecent act in Gibraltar Crescent, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. Chas. Krause, a first offending inebriate, who had been remanded for medical treatment, was discharged on payment of costs l's 6d. Harry Vosrht. Joseph Hudlev. Wm. R. V. Mitchell. Edward Collins, and two first offenders, one of them an Indian, were convicted and discharged. A first offender named Louis Jenkins was remanded for a week for medical treatment. Michael Hickey, who had been remanded for eight days to enable the police to investigate allegations that he was not maintaining his children, was made the subject of a prohibition order, and discharged. Isabella May and a first offender who did not appear had bail to the amount of £1 estreated. Frederick Watson, alias Watterstrand. was fined £1: Geo. Montagu© was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment; Joseph M. McGuinness and a first offender were fined ss.
