OBSTRUCTING THE POLICE. ./■>• CASE DISMISSED. A young man named Albert Lindale appeared at the Police Court, before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., yesterday, on a charge of having obstructed a police, officer while in the execution of his duty. Accused pleaded not guilty. It was alleged that he bad rushed in and attempted to rescue a prisoner who was being arretted by Detective Cox. He was alleged to have got ho!d of Detective Cox, and tried by every moans he could to get the other prisoner away. He had also caught hold of ChiefDetective Marsack by the collar. As soon as he found out that they were police officers he had cleared off. After hearing the evidence, the magistrate dismissed the charge, as accused pleaded that he did not know that the detectives were police officers. Amused would bo given the benefit of the doubt. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. A young man named Herbert Cooper appeared on a charge of having made use of obscene language. The chief detective explained that accused was a very decent young fellow, but, like a good many more, had got a little too much liquor on Saturday night. He was convicted and fined £2. A lad named Frank Huddy appeared on a charge of having been drunk, and also of having used obscene language. The magistrate, in fining accused £2, remarked upon the growing frequency of the use of exceptionally filthy language by young men, and said the law took a very serious view of such conduct, VAGRANCY. Francis W. L. Priestly, a middle-aged man, appeared on a charge of vagrancy. The sub-inspector stated that the man appeared to be homeless and friendless, and apparently made his living by begging. The accused, stated that he had been all over the world, and had never before been called a rogue and a vagabond. He also said that if he were given a chance he, would " clear out" of Auckland at once. The magistrate said he would give accused a chance, and accordingly convicted and discharged him. REMANDED. Peter Wilkie was charged with having stolen a shark's tooth, of the value of £1 10s, the property of Henry Michael. On the application of Chief-Detective Marsack, the case was remanded until Friday next. A man named James Campbell, who was charged with having stolen a vest, a gold watch and chain, and a sovereign case, of the total value of £20, the property of Robert Addison, was, on the application of the chief detective, remanded till Friday. Bail was allowed in two sureties of '£20 each. t. ;V MISCELLANEOUS. Alexander Young, a middle-aged man, who was charged with drunkenness, isa with having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was convicted and * discharged on the first charge, and fined 20s, or three days' imprisonment, on the second. ' •■". Similar charges were preferred against William Twentyir.an, together with an additional charge of being an habitual drunkard. " He was fined 20s. in default three days' imprisonment, on the second charge, and convicted and discharged on the others. . An old man named Thos. Fitzroy was fined 2£te for having broken the terms of his prohibition order. -■* - "William Joss, for '.a. similar offence, was convicted and filled a like amount, and "was given until Saturday in which to pay. 5 Harriet Kelly, tor having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, was convicted and discharged. - iy~A\ middle-aged i man .-. named ■■■ John Reed .was charged with having attempted to commit a! criminal offence on a little girl of 11 years of age. Only one witness gave evidence, after which accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial. Three first offending inebriates were each fined' ss. and two who did not appear had their bail estreated. -"'A man who pleaded guilty to having been drunk and disorderly while on the railway station was fined 20s, with costs.
