May 30. \ A. trial of the Fraser-Jumeaux course recorder is being made aboard the Uliraaroa, which sailed for Wellington yesterday. SCHOONER'S ROUGH PASSAGE. Sydney, May 29. The schooner Houto arrived from Herekino yesterday after a rough passage of 28 days. A succession of seas broke over her. Hooded the cabin and smashed the starboard bulwarks. She also sustained . some damage aloft. RETAILERS AND UNION BADGES. ' Sydney, May 29. .The Master Retailers' Association have • decided not to allow the wearing of union badges by shop assistants while at work. The badge must not be shown in any way during working hours. . ,'"'• LOCAL OPTION IN WEST AUSTRALIA Pkrth, .May 29. The State Premier informed a local option deputation that Cabinet intended to' carry out its promises in regard to local option, but desired to deal equitably with both parties. Compensation would come from the trade, not from the community. He hoped the people would use* their power with moderation.
