NEW GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
ATjlttßt a start is to be made on -t the " J constrjiction of tho now Government'■„ House oil its commanding site at Mount ; View: (spa tlio New Zealand Times). -The pre-: liminary work is . to bo : put "-in hand once, instruction!) to that effect having Ijfeen , issued on Saturday. A considerable jmount of levelling is first of all to be done, after which the excavations' for the |oundationß will bo made and 'the. foundations put in, all by tho Public Works Department. This work will probably occupy two or three months, and in the meantime tenders are to be invited for the supply of the materials, stone, steel, and wood—-required for the construction of the building itself. If these are found to be satisfactory—which, in view of the present state' of the markets "is most likely to be the case-'-one. will 'be accepted, and; the actual work of construction will be taken in hand by the '.Public "Works Department, which will find all the necessary labour. It is expected : that by the time . the ' foundations are ready to build upon, tho Department will bo in a position to proceed with the operations. The building will betas nearly incombustible as possible. Only the" very minimum of wood will bo used in its construction, and even that will bo subjected to a chemical treatment which will render it practically fireproof. . ' - ;,.,:.:
