MEETINGS.
TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL. The Trades and Labour Council met last night, the president (Mr. T. Long) presiding.
Unemployed: A letter was received from the. secretary of the New Zealand socialist party, thanking the Council for its co-opera-
tion with the former in its attitude during the late unemployed demonstration. The writer expressed a hope that the samo spirit of co-operation would continue, and that the time had arrived for side issues
to be buried, and for the socialists and the Trades and Labour Council to stand shoulder to shoulder in " the fight against oppression, and for the emancipation of labour." Confectioners' Union : The assistance of the Council was asked by the Canterbury Confectioners, Biscuit, and Fruit-preserving Employees' Union in obtaining an award ferthe trade by forming unions in this district. The matter was referred to the executive. Conciliation Commissioner: The Prime Minister formally acknowledged receipt of the Council's resolution regarding Mr. T. Harlo Giles' appointment as Conciliation Commissioner. A letter from the secretary of the Otago Trades and Labour Council was received on the same subject, in which the local Council's methods in seeking to have Mr. Giles removed, were characterised as " unfair. Neither communication was discussed.
The Council went into committee, and was addressed by Mr. J. A. McCullough, employees representative on tho Arbitration Court Bench. /
REV. G. H. COLE'S MISSION.
The mission of the Rev. G. H. Colo, of Melbourne, was continued last evening in the East-street Hall, Newton, and was largely attended. The speaker had chosen for his subject "The Motherhood of God," and he dealt with it in a masterly manner handling each point with telling effect. Some of the illustrations were of a very touching nature, and made a profound impression upon the audience. To-night's subject, will be " Starting from Scratch, and How to Win," and on Monday evening an illustrated lecture will bo given.
