THE MUNICIPAL YEAR.
The municipal elections being over and the composition of the Auckland City Council settled definitely for another term, it will be unanimously agreed by all citizens that the important public works in hand and in contemplation should be pushed forward rapidly by a harmonious -corporation. In this not only the City but the whole of the Greater Auckland drainage area is deeply interested, Onehunga having its own particular drainage scheme which, being now approved, ought to be pushed with equal energy. The new Mayor is, fortunately, thoroughly posted upon the all important and allied questions of works and finance, and with the return of most of the old members of the Council any check in continuity of purpose and consistency of method will be prevented. There is very frequently evinced on bodies like the- Auckland City Council a tremulous disposition to forget that Auckland is becoming a great commercial and industrial centre. From this cause arise those spasmodic attempts to check legitimate expenditure and stop necessary works with which we are all acquainted. These panics become less marked as the public mind, becoming more accustomed to the progress of Auckland, reflects itself even in the weakest representative. But we may still expect them in Auckland municipal affairs whenever the progressive element relaxes its grip upon the reins of authority and ceases to hold public attention and approval by energetic action upon the promising lines agreed upon.
