AN INSANE PRISONER.
DETERMINED ATTEMPT AT > ; SUICIDE. ' [BY TELEGH.VTII.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] Tnvercaroti.t,, Monday. A man named Clarence Matthews, about 22 years' of age, was arrested on Saturday evening, on charges of the theft of clothing valued at, £3, and having discharged, ft revolver at a man with intent to do bodily harm. . Matthews was confined in the police cells during the night, and he made a most determined but unsuccessful attempt, to commit suicide. ' The constable in charge left him for a few minutes apparently resting peacefully, hut during the officer's absence Matthews attempted to hang himself with a niece of his blanket. He tied one end round the grating above the door, and the other round his neck, after standing on a bucket. Ho then kicked the bucket away, and .would certainly have been # choked had the /constable not returned in time. r Matthews was subsequently sent to' the Seacliffo Mental Hospital.
