SCOTTISH BY-ELECTION.
LIBERALS RETAIN THE SEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— ;/ (Received March 7, 4.30 p.m.) London, March 6. The by-election for Hawick, Scotland, rendered necessary by the elevation of Mr. T. Shaw, K.C., to the Bench, resulted in the return of Sir John Barran (Liberal). The voting was as follows:— Sir John Barran (Liberal ... 3,028 Mr. H. J. Mac Kinder (Tariff Reformer) ...... ... 2,508 *Liberal majority ... 520 At the general election, Mr. Shaw, who was opposed by Sir A. Oonan Doyle, the well-known author, secured 3125 votes, as against 2444 given to his Conservative opponent. The by-election would seem to afford another indication that the tariff reformers are steadily gaining ground.
