BASTJTO CHIEFS.

AUDIENCE WITH THE KING.

SOUTH AFRICAN UNION.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—

(Received February 19, 10.30 p.m.)

London, February 19. Four native chiefs of Basutoland are at present in London as the guests of the Colonial Office.

Their visit has to do with the future of Basutoland under South African union. A proposal has been made that the territory shall become an adjunct of Orange River Colony ; but the chiefs resent this proposal, and desire that Basutoland shall remain, as at present, a distinct unit, administered by a Commissioner. The chiefs had an interview with His Majesty King Edward to-day.
