A MARATHON RACE.

LONGBOAT BEATS SHRUBB. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright(Received February 7, 4.50 p.m.) New York, February 6. Tom Longboat, the Canadian Indian long-distance runner, beat A. E. Shrubb in a race over the Marathon distance at Madison Square.

Shrubb collapsed in the twentyfifth mile.

Immediately after Longboat's defeat, at New York, of Dorando (the little Italian who finished first in the Marathon race held in connection with the Olympic Games at London last year) a match was talked of between him and Alfred Shrubb, and it has eventuated sooner than many people anticipated, doubts having been expressed as to whether Shrubb would meet the Indian. Shrubb at one time held most of the amateur long-distance English records, but he was disqualified a short time ago on the grounds of professionalism, in company with Arthur Duffey, the American amateur sprint champion, who was also disqualified on the same grounds. Shrubb visited Australia and New Zealand a few years ago.
