ANNIVERSARY DAY REGATTA.

The Auckland Anniversary Day regatta promises to be one of the finest gathering*; yet recorded in the history of the city. 'Wis but natural that a city built by the waterside ehould celebrate, its foundation •by an aquatic carnival. For 68 years has this been done, and there is at least one citizen still alive, Sir John (then Dr.) Logan Campbell, who witnessed the first regatta on the Waitemata, on January 29, 1841. Without intermission regattas have been held every Anniversary Day since then. To-day the committee consists of a body of citizens controlling an organisation subsidised by business men. citizens, and public institution*; of the town. The entries total 137, and there are a number of post entries to come in. I*'ist year the total entries numbered 134. The committee is offering £340 in prize money, /with additional trophies valued at £30. A new departure has been made in connection with the trading vessels' races, the courses having been curtailed with the. idea & giving the public a better view of the races. Instead of sailing round Tiri, the boats will race over a course between BirWhead and Rangitoto Beacon. The ■Atiia will act as flagship. She will leave tie Queen -street Wharf at 8.30 a.m., and kle up an anchorage in the stream for the .Wt race, which commences at nine O'clock. Lunch and afternoon tea will he provided on board at a nominal charge. •After the regatta the flagship will make a trip down to the Rmgitoto Beacon and back to the wharf. Tenders will ply between the wharf and the flagship throughout the day. A. meeting of the committee -was held • yesterday afternoon, and various arrangetofcats were made for the conduct of the r *g»tta. Mr. W. Swinnerton was appoint- £ starter,of the sailing races, vice Mr. » Logan, and Mr. Boonstra handieappor * the lifeboat events.
