OLD AGE PENSIONS.
THE LAW IN OPERATION. HALF A MILLION RECIPIENTS. By Telegraph.— Association.— (Received January 1, 10.30 p.m.) London, January 1. The British Post Office has been provided with 13 tons of silver to pay over half a million old age pensions. (Received January 1, 11.16 p.m.) London, January 1. The Times estimates that when all applications for old age pensions are examined it will be found that there are 620,000 entitled to pensions, costing £155,000 weekly, exclusive of the administration of the Act. The old age pension scheme "came into operation in the United Kingdom yesterday. The number of applications for pensions received totalled 652,000, made up as follows:—England, 367,197: Ireland, 193,138; Scotland, 67,785; Wales, 23,950. The original of probable applications fixed the number at 500,000, so that it has been exceeded by over 25 per cent.
