The Orsova, one of the five steamships which the Orient Steam Navigation Company is building for the Commonwealth mail service has been launched. Some eight months ago orders were placed for five steamers, and the Orsova, which : haT been constructed by Messrs. John Brown and 1 Co., Clydebank, is the first of them to take the water. Anotner (the Otwav). which is being built by the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, was : to be launched a fortnight afterwards and the rest at short intervals. Two of the boats are in the hands of Messrs. Workman, Clark, and Co., of Belfast, and the fifth is being built by the London and Glasgow Engineering Company. The new Commonwealth mail contract comes into operation in 1910, and as all the steamers are expected to be ready in the course of the spring next year they should be in ample time for the work demanded of them. At the first of the new steamers, the Orsova's i launch was anticipated-with interest. The ves- ! sels, judged by>her standard, will have a length I of some 535 ft, a breadth of 61ft, »nd a gross toni nage of about 12,000. They will have a working speed of 16J knots. Into "their design the most approved features of modern passenger-boats have been introduced. Thus the vessels will have an electric passenger lift running from the main deck to the promenade deck will boast an ; open lounge on the boat deck and will be fitted with laundries. Both first and second-class diningrooms run the full width of the ship, and , the tables are " arranged on the restaurant system. The first-class accommodation includes a divan, available for both sexes, as well as a musk-room and smokingroom. The second class is notable as scarcely inferior to the first. Cabins de luxe and other apartments en suite are, features of the new mail steamers. For individual travellers there are plenty of singleberth rooms, in addition to two-berth and a few three-berth.. In the second class nearly all the cabins are two or three berth, with a few fourberth for the use of families. Even In the thirdclass the majority of the cabins are two or four berth The old idea of herding people together In small dormitories has gone for ever. Nothing, indeed, is more remarkable in these days than the attention given to the third-class passenger, who in this case shares in the extensive deck promenades which the ship provides, and has his own diningroom. musicroom, and smokeroom. With this as the measure of the third-class accommodation the luxury of the first and second classes may be . inferred. NEW GERMAN LINER FOR THE ATLANTIC. The German company the Norddeutscher Lloyd is shortly putting a big new passenger steamship into the Atlantic service. This is the George Washington, o! 27,000 tons, which will be the largest line:- under the German flag, and will have a speed of some 18 knots. This huge vessel was to have been launched a few davs back and christened by the American Ambassador in Berlin, but unfortunately there wag an insufficiency of water at the time, and the event had to be postponed. The George Washington is scheduled to make her first voyage in June next. Her name exemplifies the current tendency of the German lines co go to America for the appellation of their shins Purely German names seem for the time being to have been wholly abandoned. One of the novel features about the George Washington is that she is to have four classes of passengeis instead of three, as has hitherto been the fashion on Norddeutscher-Lloyd liners The third class is to be an inferior sort of second and is to b» located Tight aft. Forward of the third class comes the .second class, while the fourth class, or steerage, will be in the forward part of the ship THE FORERIC. The Australian mail liner Foreric, Captain D A. Gardiner, arrived from San Francisco end Apia at 1 p.m. yesterday, and after inspection berthed at the eastern end of Queen-street Wharf The Foreric. sailed from San Francisco on November 20 and arrived at Apia on December 10. She left again on the following day and arrived as above. Strong north-east trade winds were met with until leaving Apia, thence strong south-west winds and high head seas until a few hours before reaching port. The vessel brought a cargo of canned fish and fruit, also about 1000 cases of apples and oranges and a quantity of lumber She is timed to sail for Sydney this afternoon. THE HANDA ISLE. The barquentine Handa Isle, Captain Dennison, which was reported in the, gulf on Friday afternoon from Newcastle, took up an anchorage off North Head on Saturday evening. The " windjammer," which sailed from Newcastle on November 30, met with contrary winds on the voyage. THE KOROMIKO. The Union Company's turret steamer Koromiko, Captain A. D Chnsp, arrived from Westport on Saturday morning after a fair weather passage. The Koromiko berthed at Queen-street Wharf on tier arrival, but went into the stream yesterday ? %£? £. n< L m . 00d 2 10n 5» rd « H.M.S. Powerful .in order to coal the flagship.
THE WARSHIPS. The warships Cambrian and Challenger arrived in port on Saturday morning, the former from Svdney and the latter from Port Chalmers. Both vessels took up an anchorage in the maii-o -war ground and will remain in port until after the holidays. . " THE MOKOIA. The Union Company's steamer Mokoia, Captain Robertson, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports at 9.45 a.m. yesterday and berthed at Quaystreet Jetty No. 2. The steamer left Dunedm on Tuesday last and called at the usual way ports, leaving Gisborne for Auckland at 11.15 a.m. on Saturday and arriving as above. line weather was experienced throughout the voyage. The Mokoia leaves for Sydney nt 5.30 p.m. to-day. THE MANUKA. The Union Company's flue steamer Manuka, Captain 11. E. Smith, arrived from Sydney at 6 a.m. yesterday and after inspection berthed at iiobson-street Wharf. The Manuka took her departure from Sydney at 4 p.m. on Wednesday last and met with fine weather throughout the passage. The steamer sails for East Coast and Southern ports at 10 a.m. tomorrow. THE TAIERI. The Maoriland Steamship Company's steamer Taieri, Captain Holme, arrived Ironi Newcastle on Saturday morning with a cargo of coal and sleepers and berthed at the Railway Wharf to discharge. The steamer left Newcastle on the 11th Inst, ami experienced rough and squally weather until passing the Three Kings on Friday, thence flue weather to arrival as above. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. ARRIVALS.
