RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.

THE AUCKLAND CANDIDATE. A meeting of the Professorial Board of the Auckland University College (presided over by Professor Segar) was held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of selecting this year's Auckland candidate for the Rhodes scholarship. Mr. W. G. Aldridge, being the only candidate, was accordingly selected.

Mr. Aldridge, who is the youngest son of Mr. George Aldridge, pastor of the Newton branch of the Church of Christ, is,a' native of Auckland and has been educated in Auckland. He was first a scholar at the Grafton school, where he gained a Grammar School scholarship. In December, /1900, he won the junior district scholarship at the Grammar School. In December, 1902, he gained; a senior scholarship (first .place), and two years later a junior University scholarship (eighth place). , At the University he was awarded three first-class prizes with premiums. In 1906 five first-class (first place) prizes fell to him, two 'which brought premiums. , He also secured the Sir George Grey scholarship for mathematics, mechanics, hydrostatics, and physics. Two first-class (one first place) prizes and a premium were won by him in 1907, and he retained the Grey scholarship. In 1906 and 1907 he took both sections in his B.Sc, and in 1907 qualified in pure and applied mathematics and geology. This year he sat for examinations for honours in science, and an M.Sc. degree in mathematics, mathematical physics and geology, but the' results : are not f yet known. Mr. Hector Mac Lea n, M.A., lias been nominated by the Professorial Board at Dunedin as Otago University's candidate for the 1 Rhodes scholarship for the current year. He took first-class honours in mental science. Professor Gilray has replaced Professor Benham on tho Rhodes scholarship selection committee.
