THE WEATHER.

A STEADY, downpour of rain set in yesterday morning and continued with little intermission throughout the day and night. Mr. J. T. Stevenson, F.R.A.S., is of the opinion that the rain is due to the recent gale and floods at Norfolk Island. , Indications point to a change of wind to the south-east, with heavy rain and low barometer, whilst, later, southerly winds and colder weather are anticipated. The decrease in atmospheric pressure "may, it is considered, be responsible for the cessation of earthquake shocks at Whakatane. The rain will be welcomed in the dairy districts as well as by horticulturists in the city and owners of private gardens.
