During the past week the local fruit and produce markets have been very busy, supplies in many instances being heavy. In produce there has been an unusually, large increase in the supply of new potatoes; in fact, the supply was so large that it completely gutted the market. 11l consequence of this there was a heavy drop in values. Samples sent forward were generally satisfactory, although all " lines could not be cleared at public auction. It is fully expected that a sharp rise in values will take place at an early date. Vegetables of all varieties were sent forward in very large quantities and throughout sold at unusually low values. In grain and fodder the market was very dull and there wag no change in prices to announce. About the usual supply of farmers' butter came to hand, the market being easier. ' Eggs came forward in very small quantities and remained about the same as last week's quotations. Factory cheese showed no change in value, and there was little demand in- farmers' make. Bacon and. bams, prime and factory, remained unchanged in price. In poultry an extraordinarily heavy supply was sent forward, and, although" bidding was keen, the prices obtained were generally lower than values previously ruling. The fruit market, was fairly well supplied, but it must be reported as being on the dull side as compared with former years. The only line rneetii.g with good strong demand and higher prices was that of bananas. Large shipments of this fruit arrived by the Atua from Tonga in satisfactory condition. " The same steamer also brought a consignment of pines to a poor and already glutted market. Only a small shipment of fruit arrived from Sydney by the Victoria on Monday and sold at" disappointing prices to shippers. Local supplies of fruit have been fairly heavy, and principally consisted of a large consignment of Waikato gooseberries, which sold under satisfactory competition. The first of the season's peaches made their appearance, and a shipment of apricots also arrived from the Thames. Lemons showed a marked improvement in values and promise to reach higher prices. A small supply of Whangarei oranges came forward and showed an advancement of about 4 per cent, ' on last week's rates. The second shipment of hothouse grapes from 'Whangarei was submitted «nd showed a heavy drop on last week's prices. Imported lines of apples showed an increase in demand, and values advanced considerably on last week's quotations. The following were the ruling prices at the auction sales yesterday:— Field Produce.— Potatoes : Southern, prime, old, £6 to £7 10s ton. Onions: Sydney, poor, 7s to 8s cwt; Melbourne, 10s to lis.
