Mb. and Mrs. J. Prouse left for Wellington by the Takapuna yesterday. Mr. D.D.Hyde, Government poultry expert, left for the South by the Takapuna yesterday. Mr. Justice Sim will leave Wellington for Auckland, •■ via the west coast, to-day, to open a sitting of the Arbitration Court in this city on Thursday. Mr. E. Mcßurney, late purser of the Navua, has gone to "Napier to temporarily take up the position of chief clerk in the Union Steam Ship Company's Blanch office at- that place. . Drs. T. Inglis and Pabst, of Auckland, -were passengers for Sydney last evening by the Wimmera, en route to Melbourne, where they will attend the Australasian Medical Congress. Mr. J- Harrison, of the staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company,, who lias been in South Africa for the past year, returned to Auckland on Sunday by the Victoria, accompanied by Mrs. Harmon. Mr. I. Sewell, late of the Koromiko, has successfully passed his ' examination as master in the foreign trade, before the local examiners'. Mr. Sewell is now awaiting orders, at Auckland, from the Union Steam Ship Company. The Rev. G. Bond, chairman of the Auckland Methodist district, left by the s.s. Clansman for the Bay of Islands and Hokianga districts yesterday; to visit the stations in the interests of the home mission and Church extension fund. Messrs. I). Goldie, J. Miller, and T. Hodgson, delegates from the Auckland Provincial Employers' Association, left by the s.s, Takapuna yesterday for Wellington, to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers' Federation. Dr. Pabst was yesterday granted leave of absence by * the Hospital Board from his duties as honorary opthalmic surgeon at the hospital, to allow him to attend the Medical Congress in Melbourne. Dr. Savage will undertake' Dr. Pabst'e duties at the hospital until the fetter's return. ' An interesting gathering'was held in the Eden Terrace Primitive Methodist schoolroom on Saturday afternoon, the occasion being the celebration of the 80th birthday of Mr. JR. Herbert, one of the founders of the church. After tea, which had been provided by the relatives, the Rev. T. H. Lvon proposed the health of Mr. Herbert, the Rev. W. S. Potter and Mr. W Moor (son-in-law), and Mr. T. Moor (grandson) also speaking, the latter on behalf of the descendants, of whom there are a total of 51. At a later gathering Mr. Herbert was presented with an easy chair as a token of regard from his numerous friends.
