WORK ON THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
'.; Sir, — would feel obliged if you would find space in your valuable paper for a 'few remarks on the- way the building is carried on on the Main Trunk lino by the Railway Department, under the Hon. W. Hall-Jones, M.P. for Timaru. The men there all work 10 hours, and there is no room for more hands, for the Government givo preference to -union' men. As a union man, I would like to know how many union men work on the Main Trunk railway; also if it is union rules that parties or families should be allowed on piecework, at which they make ■from £16 .to £20, whilo others cannot get one day's work. Surely, if there is room for 200 carpenters to work 10 hours, there is room'for more at eight hours, with the same quantity of material. John Mao Donald, .;;,;, Carpenter,
