When at a height of 6000 ft near Dusseldorf a sudden expansion of gas ripped Captain Abeveron's balloon, which plunged headlong for a distance of 2000 ft. The torn envelope then spreading out, formed a sort of parachute, and Captain Abeveron and Lieutenant Goctzheim alighted on their feet, greatly to the relief of a large and agitated crowd.
