FOOTBALL.

THE RUGBY GAME. A.tEX\N'r>n.\ Patik was the scene on Saturday afternoon of several games of football, - more conspicuous for the amount of vim displayed than science shown. The closing stage of « season is usually marked by tho crop of "hardy annuals" which appear. Matches between friendly societies, mercantile and financial firms and social institutions are played with a keen relish of enjoyment and vigour that suggest (to one who ; knows) visions of stiff and aching muscles and limbs for several days after. On Saturday the principal match was between a team of M.U. Oddfellows from tho Upper Thames and their city brethren. 'I ho regalia won by tho players was not in accordance with tho ancient customs of the Odor, being varied ami of many colours. ' • ■ Neither was tho dignity of the officers considered, for many times "'Noble Grands" were collared, rudely and abruptly, by newlyinitiated members of the lowest " degree." The visiting Oddfellows won by three points (,v try scored by 0. Bunting) to nil. Mr. H. Frost refcreed satisfactorily. 1.0. K., Eden, v. Onphunga: Tho Eden Lodge of Rechabitot defeated their Ono- ".. hiingft brethren by 9 points to 3. Mr. A. E. Jaggs rcfcreed.

Maeky -Logan v. King's Factories: A match was played on the No. 5 ground between a team from Maclcy-Logan's Cambridge Clothing Factory and a 15 chosen from King and Co.'a establishment. The Cambridge representatives won by 6 points (two tries scored by C. Cossin) to 3 (a try scored by Osborne). Mr. W. Moore refcreed". Banks v. College Rifles; A team from thsi Auckland banks played a drawn game with the College Rifles on Saturday—thrco points each. A further spell wa« played to get a decisive result, and the representatives of tho banks scoring first, left the field winners by 6 points to 3.

' PUBLIC SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Tho school matches were concluded on Saturday, when the Auckland representatives journeyed by train to Pukekohe, to play a ..return match against Franklin. When the teams met earlier in the season the Auckland lads had an easy win, but Saturday's match was very keenly contested. McNeil opened the score for Franklin by scoring a try, which was not converted. Westbury made the scores even by kicking a goal from a mark, and Cornaga scored a try, which Robinson converted. Franklin replied by ■;■■■; Bilkey scoring a try near the corner, the ■ kick at goal failing. From then to the call of time Frankin pressed hard, but no further .score resulted, Auckland thus winning by eight points to six. Air. Blake efficiently controlled the game, which was played throughout in the best of spirit. The town boys were hospitably entertained by the Franklin boys, and had altogether a most enjoyable trip. THE GAME AT THAMES. {BT TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Sunday. , The annual football match between teams from ■the Paeroa and Thames High Schools was played yesterday at Parawai, and a wellcontested game resulted in a win for. -..the visitors by 10 points to 3. For Paeroa tries were scored by Edwards and a native student, .both being'converted by Chamberlain, while Stewart 'scored a try for the local team, . which was cot converted. Mr. Claude Corbett, the Eastern Suburbs' five-eighth, left Melbourne on Friday, September 11 {says an Australian exchange), to join the Federal Parliamentary staff of the Sydney Daily Telegraph.' The Victorian k;Rugby Union people will,,find him a most enthusiastic Kiigbyean, a , decidedly clever player in his position, and ono who is quite . worthy of a place in any inter-State team of . the day. Claude Corbett is also a fine swimmer. No -doubt it is .hereditary, for -he is tho son of Mr. W.- F. Corbett, one of the best all-round swimmers Australia possessed ,'about 20 years ago, in the days of W. Mc- i Indoo and W. Keney.
