Those who are qualified to say so are optimistic regarding the prospects of the hemp industry during the next year for the Auckland district. So far there has not been much to justify this opinion, as the amount coming forward to the grading stores has been considerably less than for last year, when the industry was in full swing, and last month's figures were less than a fifth of those for the previous August. The quality of the hemp, moreover, is not particularly good, many of the hanks being braised and poorly scutched, while others are stained, the result in many instances of the leaf being cut too low, and in others of being insufficiently washed. Several mills are commencing operations next week, and it is considered that those who are milling their own leaf will be amply repaid. Experts will not say the same'for those who have to pay royalties or heavy freight charges on the raw material. It is held that prices .* ill firm, and that the demand will be for the better qualities, and " lair" to " good fair" will be wanted by the merchants.

The sale of work in aid of the Children's Home, Remuera, which was opened in the Wesley Hall on Wednesday afternoon, was concluded last evening with very satisfactory ' results. The greys takings amounted to 5109 10s. The committee desire to thank all who contributed towards the success ef the sale.
