FLOODS IN INVERCARGILL. Invercargill, Friday. Heavt rain fell in Invercargill yesterday morning, and in conjunction with a high spring tide and a westerly wind, caused a banking-up of the estuary and a good deal of flooding of low-lying lands. One house at least was surrounded by water,' but there was no danger to life. Boats were washed out >f the Arena! Bowing Club's shed, the new show grounds were flooded, and the new tramway bridge to Otatara was awash. BAND CONTEST. Christchttroh, Friday. The Band Contest Committee has resolved that entries for the band contest will close on September 21, but letters and telegrams bearing that date will be accepted. Colonel Cooper, Major Steward, Captain McGee, Captain Farthing, and Sergeant Hoare, have been elected i military judges. SALE OF PRODUCE BILL. ' Invercargill, Friday. , The Chamber of Commerce to-day discussed the Agricultural Produce Importation and Sale Bill, and resolved that the secretary draw up a strong protest against the Bill going through in the form proposed at present, and that telegrams be j sent to the Minister for Agriculture and the Southland members to this effect. It ] was urged that the Bill was detrimental' to the farming interests, and pressed most heavily on innocent parties, viz., the mer- : chants who purchased infected produce in j perfect good faith from a clean sample. A BANKRUPT SENTENCED. Palmerston North, Friday. Thos. Gleesou, of Rongotea, who was I found guilty at the Supreme Court of a j breach of the Bankruptcy Act by incur- I rim? debts without reasonable expectation j of being able to pay them, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment without hard labour. Mr. Justice Chapman, in refusing probation, said the Legislature intended in a case like the present one that the accused should be punished with imprisonment. He expressed regret in having to send to prison a young man of presumably good character, but he could not set at nought the provisions of the legislature. STORM AT TAURANGA. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Tatiranga, Friday. During the progress of a. thunderstorm last night a horse confined in a small paddock near the post office was struck by lightning and killed. The telephone system was affected, several instruments being disconnected, while communication with Maketu is interrupted. " MINISTERIAL INTERFERENCE." __ Napier, Friday. A legal opinion from the Solicitor-Gene-ral on the ruling given by the Commissioner of Crown Lands at the last meeting of the Land Board, which'led to the removal of Mr. Lane, came before the meeting of the Board to-day. The opinion upheld the Commissioner's ruling, but declared that the incident was closed. Mr. Lane strongly protested at what ho termed Ministerial interference, and withdrew from the meeting to emphasise his protest. Christohurch, Friday. The City Council has made arrangements to meet the objections raised by the Legislative Council to the Council's Sanitation Bill, which has been hung up. The Mayor to-day interviewed the Hon. C. Louisson on the subjects in dispute, and it is hoped that matters will be arranged. Dunedin, Friday. The Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supply Company has decided to reduce the price of butter 2d per lb from Monday next. Napier, Friday. A very old colonist, Mrs. Elizabeth Hallett, died at Taradale to-day, aged 97. Deceased arrived in 1842, and, with her husband, passed through the trying times of the pioneers'. fjoni-:. Friday.
