THE KAISER'S PORTRAIT.
PRESENT TO DALAI LAMA. By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright. (Received September 4, 1 a.m.) Berlin, September 3. The Vossische Zeifcung declares that the German Minister at Pekin has commissioned the Legation doctor to proceed to Lhasa to convey to the* Dalai Lama the Kaiser's portrait.
Lhasa is, as everyone knows, the home of Buddhism, and the Dalai Lama is the supreme ruler, but the Tashe Lama was in September, 1904, ordered to succeed to the spiritual dignities of the Dalai Lama by order of the Chinese Emperor. In a recent. number of Harper's Magazine Dr. Sven Hedin describes in wonderfully graphic language a visit he paid to the Dalai Lama at Lhasa. This young man, who in the eyes of the millions of Buddhists is the holiest of mortals, received the great explorer with simple, unaffected hospitality, and created in his mind an impression of kindliness, gentleness, and candour, which he admirably conveyed to his readers.
