Melbourne, August 31. To-DAY Was one of great ceremonial regarding the fleet. The principal attractions were the official landing at St. Hilda, procession through the streets, /and the presentation of addresses and public reception at the Exhibition Buildings.
■ Hundreds of thousands' of people thronged the streets, and every point of vantage was availed of. The day was disagreeably windy and dusty. It is doubtful if so many people were ever seen in Melbourne before.
The admirals were enthusiastically cheered along 'the whole'route of the procession.
THE ADMIRAL'S GIFTS. ASSENT OP CONGRESS REQUIRED. (Received September 1, 1.5 a.m.) Mei.boukne, August 31. It has transpired that the special authority of Congress is necessary before Admiral Sparry can assume possession of the costly presents made to him during the cruiso of the fleet. The regulations prevent admirals from accepting presents, and Admiral Sperry is provisionally doing so, pending the decision.
