Mb. J. F. Arnold, M.P., left Lyttelton last night r for Wellington by the b.& Pateena. .. ■ ~

'Mr. Isaac Hopkins, the Government apiarist, is at present in Wellington. He expects to return to Auckland shortly.

Mr.*- J. Gilruth, who has resigned the [>ositiont>f chief veterinarian for New Zeaand, has ■left for Sydney. He will return to "New Zealand iu a few weeks.

- At a meeting of the Christchurch Hospital Board yesterday (states a Press Association telegram) Miss Mabel Thurston, matron of the Grey mouth Hospital, was appointed matron of the Christehurch Hospital in place of Miss Ewart, resigned.

Mr. Charles Saunders, the English tenor, has returned to Auckland after spending a week at Rotorua. The visitor was charmed by the wonders of the thermal region, and thoroughly enjoyed his stay. The effect upon his health also has been most beneficial.

The Mayor of Auckland (Mr. A. M. Myers), Messrs. L. J. Bagnall and A. J. Entrican, the City Council's representatives, at the conference at Wellington of local bodies concerned in the Auckland Drainage Bill, leave Wellington for Auckland this morning.

Mr. E. Clifton, chief inspector of stock, who has been on a short business visit to Auckland, returned to Wellington by the Rotoiti yesterday. Mr. E. G. Empson, inspector of stock at Hokitika, who has been on sick leave at Rotorua, returned South yesterday by the same boat, much benefited by his trip.

Mr. G. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, arrived at Gisborne from Wellington yesterday, according to our correspondent, and was to deliver a lecture at His Majesty's Theatre in the evening in connection with the teachers' winter school, to which the Inspector-General yesterday paid a visit.

Mr. David Kutton (Wanganui) recently attended the Art Masters' Congress, held at South Kensington : 900 art teachers from all parte of the world assembled, representing 32 different countries. Mr. Hution has Deen on the Continent for some time, making copies of famous pictures, sketching from nature and visiting noted art schools and technical schools in Italy, Switzerland, and France.
