CHARGE OF MURDER.
THE MANGAKAHIA CASE. ACCUSED COMMUTED FOE TRIAL. [BY TELEGRAPH —OS'S COBEESPOSDEJT.] Whang Wednesday. The Mangakahia alleged murder case occupied the time of the S.M. Court during the greater part of yesterday, Mr. It. W. Dyer presiding. Hirini Ngatimo Hohepa and Emma Ngatimo Hohepa were charged with the murder of Makariui Hirini Ngatimo Hohepa at Otarao on or about July 2 bv burning him with fire. Sergeant Moore conducted the case for the police, and Mr. Carruth appeared for the defence. The evidence was almost exactly the same as that given at the inquest, Merepeka Ngatimo Hohepa being the first witness, and his account being substantiated by the otaer witnesses. The evidence was of such a shocking nature that much of it was heard by the magistrate with closed doors. The only new evidence was that elicited from Makarini Matiu Ngatimo, who deposed to the madness exhibited by the accused (his brother) Hirini and his father Ngatimo, and also to the fear with which these two inspired all the others present. The accused, who reserved their defence, were committed to take their trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court in Auckland.
