ALLEGED POCKET-PICKING. At the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kettle, S.M., William Henry Wallace, a carpenter, was charged on remand with stealing, from the person of Pirima | Watney a purse containing £1 Is 3d in cash, and two saloon tickets valued at £1 I 9» 3d. . ' i Complainant, a Maori, stated that while I he was watching the procession in Queeni street on' Monday last- accused put • hi* hand in tho pocket in which witness kept his purse. He felt for, the' purse, and discovered that it had disappeared. He accused Wallace of stealing it, and then informed a police sergeant of what had happened. The sergeant took both to the water police station, where they* were searched, but 110 purse was to be found. Shortly after this, Detective DeNorville was sent for, and on looking for the purse discovered it in witness' overcoat pocket. Witness was positive thai be did not put it there. Wallace denied the allegation made against him, and was remanded until Saturday next in order that further inquiries might be made. MISSING POSTAL NOTES. 4 Percy Stephen Bond, a young man. was charged on remand with stealing on or bout -May 13 last a postal packet- containing two New Zealand postal no'tes, and 8d in stamps, to tho total value of 18s Bd. On the application of Chief Detective Marsack the accused was further remanded until to-day. ' • MISCELLANEOUS. For committing a- breach of his prohibition order, James Deerey was fined £1 and costs. Ida May, a second offender, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Four first offenders were similarly dealt with, and three others were each fined 5s and costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Henry Bar stow, an old man, and a fourth offender for drunkenness within six months, was-declared to be an habitual drunkard, and was . committed to Pakatoa Island for 12 months.
