A feeling of confidence is gradually being restored all round, and- the general outlook, ■ whilst not showing eviI dence of' any abnormal activity, would seem :] to indicate that continuous business "can be | expected of a healthy and increasing volume. -\ . The recent unseasonable weather has had l\ -•'■". a marked effect on iS* business done by the retail establishments, but a continuance ot II '■■ ; present climatic conditions will soon • right '\-, . matters. The various local factories all have plenty it of work ■in sight to keep them fully occupied, and the number of public work*) shortly to bo commenced will provide activity for the building and allied trades for some time ; to come. ■:■'"-.■■ 'J:"■'■[. Sultanas: Demand for spot parcels has shown an improvement recently. The position of new fruit remains very firm, with farther adv?nce in price not unlikely. Desiccated jcoanut: Cable to hand advises an advance, which hardly comes as a surprise, in view of the lower price recently - ruling. ■-'.'__ "..'■ • ;, Currants: Little disposition is being shown . by' buyers to operate r>n the new crop,-and present information available seems to justify , this reticence. Local inquiry is brisker. Cartons, are in good request. . WhiMead: Market is easier for forward shipment, .but parcels close at hand are •commanding full prices. ,' Asparagus: Normal demand existent; prices for the new pack more likely to move '■■■ up than ; down. : V-....V'-"/'.' ?;.'»■•■' ■ Sicily Almonds: Balance of old crop is g ; ' being cleared at slightly lower figures. v / r jP Bluestone: : Quotation is now on an easier basis;. : "''-.': '. *• ' ';/" * ".•■''' . Cocoa- Beans: Latest cables ' denote a further weakening in the market. ; - t . - ' Camphor: Market firming up. , , Dates: - Very ■ good inquiry on the spot. Canned Fruits: Market for new American p:.: -: pack is firm. -~--^~- ; -.>-_-.*-' : '--- -•«"—<-; Gum? Arabic: Old crop is;.now practically s~ sold up, and news ,is awaited re the new r\ ■ crop. '■•■;" '-'."■-■],-■ Salmon: -Business has been done on quotation' for new pack of red Alaska,' and it looks as though 1 buyers will have to go.in early :to get full requirements. v --.-<■ .Hides: There, we're large supplies at last weak's sale, a good clearance being effected at auction at late rates, with stout ox inclined to be firmer. .. .. Sheepskins: The advance notified in last week's report has been fully maintained under strong competiton. ; .'."'..-■ " Tallow: No change to report. ■■. 4 •Fungus: Only small quantity is arriving. Price,is a shade easier. Potatoes: The Ennerdalo < brought 2540 sacks ana tho Talune 733 sacks, which arrived to an absolutely, bare market. The bulk; of. these shipments would go straight into .consumption - from ship's side. Stocks will bo exhausted again before the next steamer arrives here on Thursday; from the ' South. havo been no importations from Tasmania lately. Prices in the South have gone up, and now that most of the potatoes are pitted there is no doubt a firmer market will result Price is £6 5s ex store, with a very good demand. x i; Onions: Stocks were exhausted on arrival " of, the Tahme, which vessel brought 160 sacks. m These will not be sufficient to supply || is the ' market until next arrivals. Price is firm ■■:■ at £fl ex store. - ,' Oats:- There is a much firmer feeling in the South, and weak holders of a few days back have cither sold or decided to hold. Southern advices point to v a very much stronger feeling, as' Australia' is likely to come into this market again. The Ennerdalo brought a small shipment from tho South. The Wanaka is due at the end of 1 the week with further supplies. Price ex ship 2s 20d, ex store 2s lid. '.->.' H * Bran: There is a better demand. Supplies are not at all heavy, but sufficient to meet requirements. Price £6 2a 6d. ~ . Pollard The market is fairly well supPollard: The market is fairly well supplied. . The inquiry is good. Price £7 15s. S| ."- r Chaff: A firmer tone prevails in the South. Our market is well ' stocked. Price £6 ISs ■ for Southern, £6 5s for local. ' Rice Meal: The market is bare. Next arrivals will be by the sailing vessel James Craig from ' Melbourne. : ; . J . Fowl Wheat: If anything tho Southern market is firmer. Demand is good. Price 5s CX store. . .... ... ■; ~; .•.'>>-■'. .: Maize: The only arrivals since our last reWm port are) about 200 \ sacks ox Ngatiawa and Apanui. These will, of course, not be suffi- '•.'-/_. cient to keep .this market going, and orders will remain uniilled. There is no alteration '-'. to price.;- > ' ; ■ . ' Flax: The market is" a shade weaker. There is no export business doing now with London. Prices still remain nominally at; £22 for good fair, £20 103 to £21 for fair, and "' ' £18 to £19 for common. Tow: Very little of this is arriving. The price for iocal use is £4 to £5. /,'; 1 Ceylon Tea: Heavy supplies continue to come on the market, and as .quality is more or less of a class which buyers have already ;■ fully stocked themselves with, there is little f;. improvement to note in., the market. The slight improvement in quality noticeable in | some of the teas, however, is giving a better ! tone to demand, and if supplies fall off as is usually the case at this time of year, we will see a dearer market. The few teas that showed better quality were carefully select- •■ ed by buyers, and realised better prices. - Commonest on the other hand continues i quiet. Common to medium leaf tea in IS • Pekoes shows weakness, as also do light t& liquoring brokens at about 40 cts. Newer Ebyas show a little improvement in cup,, hiving more flavour, but are still very light, and .have poor appearance. Dusts and tannings are in rather better inquiry. We quote as follows:— blackish, tippy leaf, good quality, 30 cte; Pekoe Souchong for price 31; Pekoe Souchong, boldish leaf, fair strength, 32; Pekoe for price, choppy leaf, 33; Pekoe, clean liquor and fair quality, 35 Broken Pekoe, for price, 32 Broken Pekoe, blackish, irrainy leaf, some tip, colour liquor, 37; Broken Pekoe, well made, .V tippy, coloury liquor, 50; Broken Orange , Pekoe, tippy, coloury, good quality, 54; Bro- •■, ken. Several merchants have been getting quotations for certain lines in • order to cable, to,. their principals at Home, and in some instances inquiries have come from that quarter. The bulk of sales, ho ever, so far has not increased. Pale Select: Arrivals of this class are ex--1 tremely small, but the demand is not active. Ordinary: Good thoroughly cleaned rescraped sells readily, but the quality arriving is only very moderate. -quarter scraped ordinary has been eagerly asked for, but in most cases lower prices have been offered. Sales of this class have been fair of late. Medium ordinary and good washed nuts sell at late rates. There has been a fairly steady demand for white swampy sorts, and good white sugar. East Const continues to reach here in only limited quantities, but there is practically no inquiry for this class at present. Black: Bold rescraped lumps sell readily, as docs also good No. 1 hard steel. Mixed sorting lots do not meet with any favour at present, and this grade is accumulating, Good hard nuts are salable. • Sugar for the time being is neglected. ■ Bush: Pale rescraped lines continue to meet with ready t sale. The demand for other grades of this class is only spasmodic. Bled bush is not asked for. . . Chips and Dust: Bright chips and dust, if colour is good, are eagerly wanted. The quantity of these offering is only very moderate. Ordinary chips and dust, "and diggers' . chips and dust; of good colour, are inquired for. There is a 1 demand for good black pile chips, but prices offered are lower than have been lately'ruling. Black chips and dust, black seeds, and black riddlings. if in dry condition, still meet with ready sale. AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE BUSINESS DONE YESTERDAY. Previous day's closing sales.
